Arcus Consulting are a nationwide consultancy practice covering multiple disciplines, in support of the housing and construction sectors. In order to ensure their environmental consultants and ecologists are prepared should the worst happen whilst out on site, they ask the First Aid Training Cooperative to deliver environment specific Emergency First Aid at Work courses at their various office locations around the UK.
Depending on the site that consultants are working on, we’ll often add our ‘+outdoor’ or ‘+forestry’ module to the standard Emergency First Aid at Work course content. This really helps contextualise the course content for the Arcus consultants and ecologists, as well as often being a requirement of access to some sites, particularly Forestry Commission or Forestry & Land Scotland sites.
The nature of the job that the consultants and ecologists do means that they are often working alone, in remote, or difficult to access locations, in all weathers and at all times of year. For this reason we always ensure that basic good practice from Outdoor First Aid is also included, within the realms of a one day course. For example, insulating and protecting oneself if stuck in remote terrain. Calling for help in the outdoors with poor phone signal, and more benign aspects such as tick bites – a really common issue for workers on moorland and in forests.
