Simon had attended other Outdoor First Aid courses and found ours very different and empowering. He and Cory discuss the differences between our courses and why an Outdoor First Aid course is different to an urban or workplace first aid course. They also discussed the background that led to the creation of the First Aid Training Co-operative plus the impact of Covid-19 on our business. You can listen to the whole podcast here.

Some of the differences cited about they way we run our courses were:

  • Real incident scenarios in the context of the course participants’ workplace
  • Improvising skills with a limited or no first aid kit
  • The person being the casualty on a course is also working on assessing the skills of their first aider
  • Real first aid is done under pressure and this is replicated to an extent on our courses
  • Learning is in the reviewing of what you’ve just done
  • Scenario based exercises help to hone the skills learn over the 2 days of the course
  • As a result, we have a very high return rate with clients

What is different about Outdoor First Aid courses?

  • National Governing bodies require it of instructors
  • Suitable and confidence raising for individual hillwalkers, kayakers
  • The time it will take for emergency services to get to you
  • Environmental factors for you, your group and your casualty
  • Hypothermia and other environmental factors affecting your casualty
  • Calling for help in remote settings on land or water
  • Good first aid and confident first aid makes such a difference to the outcome for your casualty
