On a balmy Saturday morning in July, 2025, the recently formed Nairn Links Parkrun marked its 16th event with enthusiasm and community spirit. A total of 149 runners completed the course – 31 smashed their personal bests and a remarkable 61 participants were first-time visitors, including 7 new ‘parkrunners’.
But it wasn’t just about the run. Following the event, Nairn Links parkrun hosted an essential Emergency First Aid session led by Cory Jones of First Aid Training Co-operative. This was an incredible opportunity to equip the volunteer team with vital lifesaving skills.
Why First Aid matters at Parkrun
Parkruns are community-centric runs, entirely organised by volunteers under the Parkrun UK umbrella. With unpredictable weather, varied fitness levels and potential incidents ranging from fainting spells to more serious emergencies, first aid trained volunteers are essential. The presence of at least one trained first aider at each event can turn a life-threatening incident into a manageable situation.
It’s clear that the safety of participants is a top priority – and that starts with proactive training.
About Cory Jones: First Aid Expert

Cory Jones is no ordinary instructor. As a co‑founder and director of the First Aid Training Co‑operative, he brings over 30 years of outdoor and first aid experience. Cory began delivering Red Cross courses in 2001 and has since trained in wilderness, mental health first aid, and tailored emergency response settings. He’s led sessions globally including in Rwanda, Kenya and across Europe.
What makes Cory outstanding isn’t just his credentials – it’s his ability to connect with diverse groups and adapt essential skills for real-world situations. That was exactly what the volunteers at Nairn needed.
What the Parkrun Training Covered
Cory’s session post-run session for the volunteer organisers in Nairn focussed on:
- CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation): Hands‑on practice for all volunteers.
- AED (Automated External Defibrillator): Correct pad placement and device operation.
- Emergency response drills: Simulating how to respond calmly during crises.
As described by Nairn Links parkrun’s Facebook page, “This morning’s parkrun was followed by excellent training in CPR and AED use from the fanatic Cory Jones, of First Aid Cooperative.” It was described as a “fanatic” session – not due to intensity, but Cory’s infectious enthusiasm and commitment to quality training.
A Ripple Effect of Safety and Confidence
Here’s why this training matters:
- Preparedness: Immediate response – from CPR to AED use – can mean the difference between life and death.
- Confidence: Volunteers felt empowered, knowing they could act decisively if an emergency occurred.
- Community resilience: Nairn Links parkrun isn’t just about fitness – it’s a support network. First aid training strengthens that network throughout the community beyond the Parkrun events.
