Managing the transition to the new GDPR regulations

The General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) will come into force on the 25th of May of 2018. The GDPR will supersede the Data Protection Act of 1998 which could never have foreseen the way in which we use data today.

This new legislation ensures that companies who hold client data are liable for how that data is used. This involves making sure personal data is stored safely and also requires companies to let people know how their information is going to be used. If any data breaches occur companies are required to have their own strategy for detecting, managing and informing anyone affected. They are also legally bound to inform the Information Commissioners Office of the breach within 72 hours.

How will the Co-operative ensure it complies with GDPR?

The Co-operative has already carried out a review of the way it collects personal data. We’ve looked at how it is stored and used, plus how it would detect and manage a data breach. We will;

  1. Use our monthly newsletter and client management software system to inform all current clients about the changes to our practices
  2. Update statements on course registration forms and the website about how the company uses client data
  3. Review all software where the Co-operative stores client data to make sure it is secure.

You can expect more information in the coming weeks. We have also published information on our website (click here) and are ensuring that all of our staff and trainers undergo appropriate training on the new regulations.
